Starting your therapeutic journey can be daunting and overwhelming. I believe that each individual possesses the inherent wisdom and strength to overcome life’s challenges. When working with me, I aim to create a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences at your own pace. I hope to empower you to break free from negative patterns, develop healthier coping strategies, and achieve a more balanced and fulfilling life.

My approach is grounded in empathy, authenticity, and unconditional positive regard, allowing you to feel heard and understood. Together, we will navigate any obstacles hindering your healing and growth.

I understand firsthand how overwhelming it can feel when life doesn’t go as planned, and how isolating it can be when you’re struggling to find your way. I have experienced mental health issues most of my life, such as mood disorders and navigating challenging family dynamics, including divorce and blended families. My approach is built on the belief that vulnerability is not a weakness, but a strength, and that every person has the capacity for resilience and growth.

I hold a B.A. in Psychology from Simon Fraser University, a BCIT certificate in Public Relations, and experience in mediation and litigation. I am currently completing my Master’s in Counselling from City University.

More Than Just My Work

I am an avid learner with a deep love for the outdoors, I thrive on staying active, whether exploring nature or engaging in physical activities. I rarely turn down pizza and make an excellent chocolate chip cookie. Also, proudly navigating the joys and challenges of parenting with my partner, I have two wonderful little ones and a bonus child who all keep life lively and full of adventure!

My desire to help those in psychological distress derives from my own experience with life-threatening anorexia and bulimia many years ago. My personal struggle led me to discover and implement mindfulness techniques, as well as insight-oriented and solution-focused strategies, that I now impart to my own clients. The therapy models I find most useful are Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Internal Family Systems, and tailor a treatment plan for every individual’s needs.

A clinician since 1986, a musician, artisan, and passionate student of life – in me, you will find elements of both artist and scientist, someone who makes treatment decisions based on sound principles of practice, who also looks for and reveals the beauty of life and in you. I believe that acceptance, gratitude, and forgiveness of self and others are lifelong processes that, when practiced, lead to finding meaning, joy, and peace in the brief time we have here on earth.

I wish I could say I’m with my dog, but that 34-year chapter has ended for now. I was a dog mom for between 1-4 dogs nonstop between April 1990 and June 2024. Not having a canine companion has been a big adjustment this year. I still love dogs so much. I am also the proud mom of a neurodiverse young adult who has been successfully launched into mostly independent living. Additionally, I built the BA program in Applied Behaviour Analysis and Autism at CapU from the ground up before I retired in 2010.

“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.” Albert Einstein

I describe myself as accessible, responsive, engaged, experienced, knowledgeable, compassionate, and trauma-informed. I also like to believe I have a very good sense of humour! I continue to work on myself, embrace the inevitable changes of life, and develop skills toward helping and healing the deep wounds we all hold within.

I received my Master’s degree in School and Community Psychology in 1986 and my PhD in Educational and Clinical Psychology in 1991, both from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.

More Than Just My Work

When I’m not working, I can be found at my piano at home or at the rehearsal studio with my band, in my sewing room, working on a quilt, reading on the couch, playing in my garden, or exploring the trails of North Vancouver.

I believe that counseling is a two-way process which means working together to identify problems and develop solutions. I believe my client is their life expert and I will do my best to meet them where they are and support them in their life journey. I decided to become a clinician because I have always found individuals’ resiliency and perseverance in facing their life challenges extremely inspirational. I became a counselor to help others find their path again and feel privileged to witness that.

I view counseling as a journey of self-exploration by the client which helps them increase their level of self-understanding and self-awareness. I embrace imperfections while remaining open to improving. I believe the connection and rapport we build together are crucial to therapeutic success. I hope to be able to provide a safe, non-judgmental space for my clients to assist them in the process of discovery and acceptance of the self.
